The 'Why ' Behind FutureBuilt ENT.
Meet the Founder
At just 15 years old, Joe Thomas’ life changed when his mother was incarcerated. With little direction and a minimal support system, he was left to navigate life alone. But instead of giving up, he transformed pain into purpose, recognizing that the system wasn’t broken, it was working exactly as designed.
That realization sparked the creation of FutureBuilt ENT.
Originally from New Orleans and now based in Dallas, Joseph is a college student, entrepreneur, and visionary leader.
He founded FutureBuilt as a student-led movement that turns struggle into strategy and school into a pathway to success beyond the classroom.
Through FutureBuilt, My Brother’s Keeper (MBK), an initiative founded by President Barack Obama, and other youth-centered initiatives, Joe is helping underserved students and communities secure job placement, launch careers, disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, and reclaim their voice and legacy. He didn’t become a statistic, he became the blueprint.
In this photo, Joe stands alongside students from the community, a moment that reflects more than presence; it represents commitment through his work with My Brother’s Keeper (MBK), an initiative founded by former President Barack Obama.
He’s not just showing up, he’s building something lasting. His role extends far beyond mentorship.
He’s partnering with schools and districts to shift outcomes to ensure the next generation sees opportunity where systems once created barriers.
From campus visits to strategic meetings with district leaders, Joe is deeply embedded in the work. His focus is on access, representation, and strategy, making sure students aren’t just seen but fully supported.
Every conversation, every handshake, every initiative is a piece of a larger vision: helping students navigate the system with intention and equipping them with the structure to thrive.
From the football field to a forever bond — built on trust, truth, and the power of story.
Washington Post best-selling author Kent Babb wrote a widely acclaimed book featuring Joe’s story entitled, 'Across the River'. The book earned national recognition, winning The Year’s Best Sports Writing (2021) and The Best American Sports Writing. In the award-winning novel Babb and standout Edna Karr High School linebacker Joe shared a connection built on respect, authenticity, and a shared purpose.
Through his reporting, Babb followed Joe closely, capturing not only his athletic excellence but also his resilience amid the challenges of growing up in New Orleans. Babb portrayed Joe with empathy and depth, revealing Joe’s determination to rise above his circumstances and create a better future.
Their relationship extends beyond that of writer and subject—it reflects a genuine bond grounded in trust and understanding.
All these years later, Kent and Joe remain close, a testament to the mutual respect forged during the powerful journey chronicled in Across the River solidifying Joe as an example of resilience, leadership, and impact.
